FEATURED IN PARADE: Native New Yorker Steve Alpert started out painting oil landscapes, but in 2003, something compelled him to create art honoring men and women in uniform. “Once I began to make these paintings, I had no clue what to do with them or where they would go,” Alpert writes in his memoir, Worth Fighting For: A Journey of Self Discovery. From battlefield tableaus of tanks and Blackhawk helicopters to touching scenes of soldiers carrying a flag-draped coffin, he amassed a vast body of work that pays tribute to American soldiers and the military experience.
